A Stepping Stone on the Path to the Future

A Stepping Stone on the Path to the Future

MARYSVILLE, CALIFORNIA: The 2018 season will mark Walter Brown’s fifteenth year as a Host Parent for the Marysville Gold Sox. “We love to see such a genuine person like Walt open his doors for our players year after year,” says VP/GM Michael Mink, “it shows how well-knit our community is and how every single person is an important link to our baseball club.”

Mr. Brown decided to become a Host Parent in 2003 after talking to the General Manager at the time. He said he had the room in his house and decided it would be a good idea to host a few players during the season. After all, “these are all college kids with big dreams,” he says.

This past season, Mr. Brown hosted three Gold Sox players and says he loved the camaraderie between them, “There were lots of hugs and lots of love, and respect...I had three great players and overall gentlemen” he prides.

The most rewarding aspect about being a Host Parent for Mr. Brown is “seeing them progress and getting to be a stepping stone on their path to the future.” Many players stay in touch with him after staying him for the summer; “[they] come to me for advice that they should be going to their parents for,” he jokes, “but it’s because they trust me.”

As someone who hosts up to five players a season, this is his advice for people wanting to host players in the upcoming seasons: “The biggest thing is to start with one, don’t start with two or three; and don’t overload yourself. It’s the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done.”
