Tides are Turning for the Gold Sox

MARYSVILLE, CALIFORNIA: TUESDAY, JULY 17, 2018 - The tide is turning for the Yuba-Sutter Gold Sox as they look to send 6 talented players to the 2018 GWL All-Star Game on Monday, July 23rd. “We’re excited to see our guys perform at the All-Star Game. They’ve put a lot of work in and we’re looking forward to this,” said VP/GM Michael Mink.
The Gold Sox had a rough start before the game on Monday as the first base line was completely flooded. During the game, they fell behind the Lincoln Potters 3-0 on a three-run homerun in the first inning and it looked as though the Gold Sox would have another loss at Colusa Casino Stadium. The team who has not had much luck started to show some fortune on a hot, humid night in July. “The guys showed character last night and we believe we can still make it to the playoffs,” said Mink.
That belief showed in the staff and players last night as they rallied back to win 9-8 over the Potters. The Monday night win gave the team a 3-game winning streak and the first victory over Lincoln this season. The Gold Sox are four and a half games in back of the Gems and four games behind the Seals with eighteen games to play for the final GWL playoff spot. The team received even more good bounty from the tide as the GWL announced that six Gold Sox players would be on the 2018 South All Star Team.
The Gold Sox will send Catcher, Jacob Terao (University of Portland); 2nd Baseman, Steve Robinson (Cal State East Bay); Outfielder, Brody Clifford (Dixie State University); and Pitchers, Zachary Perkins (Feather River College); Mason Verhees (Academy of Art); and Alex Zalasky (University of Concordia-Irvine) to Klamath Falls to play on the 2018 South All-Star Team. Gold Sox Field Manager, Jeramy Gillen will replace the Potters’ manager due to work commitments and lead the team against the 2018 North All-Stars.
Brody Clifford was the only player in the league who was selected through a unanimous decision. Terao stuck with the team even after obtaining a leg injury; Robinson has also been working through an injury and both players have persisted and showed their dedication. Perkins was cut from the Lincoln Potters in week 2 of the season and was given a chance with the Gold Sox, where he prospered. Mason Verhees came to the team through a teammate and was quickly able to show off his skillset. Zalasky had to prove that he had what it took to be on the team and he faced this challenge with a smile. “All of these players have worked extremely hard and overcame many obstacles to get to this place. I’m excited to see that their talent is being recognized,” said Mink.
The team is continuing to build its pitching staff up. In the last week, the Gold Sox have brought on Jamie Maples (Pierce College), AJ Hedley (Jamestown), John Papapietro (Sacramento City College), Ryan Ahern (Bridgeport, CT), Dakota Redfern (UC Davis), and Andrew Meister (Holy Names).
The 2018 All-Star Game is set to start at 6:35PM at Kiger Stadium in Klamath Falls. Players will be signing autographs at 4:00PM and will be participating in a Home-Run Derby at 4:30PM.
The Gold Sox take on the Lincoln Potters in Game 2 of their 3-game series this week. Today is also Tropical Tuesday at Colusa Casino Stadium. Hot dogs are $2.00 each and fountain drinks are just $1.00 each.
